The Positive Effects of Fucoidan from Mekabu, Mozuku and Fucus in Reducing Osteoarthritis Symptoms by Dr Susana Trujillo

Osteoarthritis is the most predominant form of arthritis.1 At the same time, osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic health conditions among adults.

Supplementation with fucoidan decreased the leptin and IL-1β levels. These studies suggest that the oral administration of Fucoidan may improve meniscal/ligamentous injury-induced osteoarthritis. ”

— Dr. Susana Trujillo

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, January 31, 2019 / — Osteoarthritis has an inflammatory element affecting the synovium (the soft tissue that lines the spaces of diarthrodial joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae) and cartilage, which leads to subchondral bone tissue breakdown, resulting in pain, stiffness, and joint failure.2 Several studies have suggested that osteoarthritis joint degeneration occurs from a combination of mechanical stresses and biochemical factors.3 Chondrocytes as well as synovial cells, in an elevated osteoarthritis condition, express inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β and the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. As a result, there is an increase in the matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) and some pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8, IL-6, prostaglandin E2, and nitric oxide.3

Osteoarthritis models can be classified into primary (spontaneous) and secondary (post-traumatic OA, including induced models) osteoarthritis.4 At the same time, obesity has long been recognized as a potential risk factor for osteoarthritis, especially in the knees. By increasing the mechanical forces across weight-bearing joints, obesity or the excess of body weight may lead to cartilage degeneration. Other causes such as inflammation and lipid metabolism disorder in obesity are also associated with osteoarthritis. Recent studies reported that inflammatory cytokines such as leptin, adiponectin, and IL-1β are involved in obesity-associated in osteoarthritis.2,4

Various approaches used to treat osteoarthritis include non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments. Pharmacological treatments include analgesics or anti-inflammatory agents such as acetaminophen, cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors, glucosamine/chondroitin sulfates, non-selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and intra-articular (IA) corticosteroids. Still, these treatments have side effects, for example, NSAIDs are correlated with an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV), severe gastrointestinal (GI), and renal injuries. Based on the diverse and various side effects, various studies have focused on functional foods for the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis, which may result in the promotion of cartilage health and safety, even after long-term use.1,3

A very interesting and helpful functional food is known as Fucoidan. Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide that contains L-fucose and sulfate groups and found in various species of brown seaweed such as Cladosipohon okamuranus (Mozuku), Undaria pinnatifida (Mekabu) and Fucus vesiculosus (Fucus). Because of their pharmacological properties such as the antioxidant,9 anti-tumor,9 anti-inflammation,10 anti-diabetic,10 and anti-obesity properties,7 Fucoidan has gained significant attraction. Recent studies indicated that Fucoidan has the potential to suppress inflammation in collagen-induced osteoarthritis. Furthermore, Fucoidan is potent as a therapeutic agent that provides hypolipidemic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Fucoidan obtained from brown seaweeds shows promise in taking on aspects of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.6 In another study, a team of researchers looked at the effect of Fucoidan on markers of rheumatoid arthritis in laboratory conditions and published their findings in Inflammation. Their findings concluded that: “Fucoidan may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.”7 Additionally, a third study looked at the effects of fucoidan on symptoms and inflammatory cytokine activation in 40 rats with osteoarthritis. The scientists found “that administration of fucoidan prevents the progression of osteoarthritis” in the rats. These results were published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.6

Fucoidan extracted from Mekabu, Mozuku and Fucus showed anti-inflammatory effects on osteoarthritis induced inflammation. The hypolipidemic properties worked against fat accumulation and protected the joint and cartilage on osteoarthritis induced male rats. In addition, supplementation with fucoidan decreased the leptin and IL-1β levels. These studies suggest that the oral administration of Fucoidan may improve the obesity and meniscal/ligamentous injury-induced osteoarthritis. At the same time, Fucoidan also can enhance the immune system and to improve the Quality of Life in people with osteoarthritis.

Like all Pereg bread crumbs, these new varieties are made from fresh-baked loaves, not recycled from stale old bread. They are then combined with the top-quality spices that are the bread and butter, so to speak, of Pereg’s extensive line of all-natural seasonings from around the world.

These flavors aren’t the only thing that’s new about Pereg’s line of seasoned bread crumbs. Look for the new stay-fresh package with a resealable zip top – a little smaller to fit neatly on your shelf but containing the same amount of product as before.

All Pereg bread crumbs and panko products are all-natural, vegan, certified non-GMO, and OU and CRC kosher-pareve, so you can enjoy them with any meal. (MSRP: $4.85 for a 9 oz bag). Use them to add crunch and flavor to chicken, fish, pasta, and vegetables in recipes like these:

Sweet Chili Panko Salmon
4 skinless salmon filets, about 6 ounces each
1¼ cup Pereg Sweet Thai Chili Panko
1 Tbsp. pepper
1 Tbsp. minced parsley
½ cup melted butter
Melted butter or olive oil as needed

Pat salmon filets dry with a paper towel and arrange in a baking pan sprayed with non-stick spray. Brush each filet with butter or olive oil.

Combine panko, pepper, and parsley in a small bowl. Spoon mixture on top of filets and bake uncovered at 375 degrees about 12-15 minutes, until fish flakes easily. (Recipe adapted from The Food Channel.)

Easy Breaded Chicken

6 chicken cutlets (or whole fryer cut up into pieces)
1 cup Miracle Whip or any other brand of mayonnaise
1 package of Pereg Natural Foods Spicy Panko or Golden Crisp Breadcrumbs

Wash chicken pieces well. Roll chicken pieces in the Pereg Panko or Bread Crumbs. Spread mayonnaise over the coating crumbs. Roll the chicken in the crumb or panko coating again. Place on baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about one hour or until golden brown. (Recipe courtesy of The Set Table.)

5 Day Low Cal, Fat, Protein Fasting – An Old Chinese Tradition Scientifically Proven to Rebuild Self Immune & Microbiome to Fight Chronical Disease & Depression

We come together to: “Make way for what we truly are in essence – infinitely free beings, embodiment of love on every level, sparks of the divine, perfect and full"”

— Formal National Martial Art Head Coach Junfeng Li

LENOX,, MA, US, January 31, 2019 / — Can you get dramatic health benefits from a modest adjustment in how you eat? A clinically-proven regimen that mimics fasting with a low-calorie, low-protein and low-fat diet for 5 days every 3 months says yes. Over 20 years of research at USC has shown this simple, 3-times-a-year, regimen to be superior to ongoing calorie restriction, 1 or 2 day intermittent fasting, or extended fasts. Besides reduced waist size, the 5 day fasting mimic diet (FMD) activates longevity genes and regenerative cells, reduces inflammation, and improves a variety of bio-markers for both healthy individuals and those challenged by illness. The 5 day regimen is not austere. The meals are savory and satisfying. For the rest of the month, you can eat as usual. However, we strongly suggest a 6 month plant-based diet in addition to the FMD regimen, as meat protein is acidic and fish is unavoidably polluted.

While research is ongoing as to what makes this regemine so effective, it has been demonstrated to clear dampness in the body, reduce inflammation, balance probiotics and rebuild the essential microbiome system that has received so much attention from the health community recently.

For those struggling with acute health issues, here are some specific clinical results from the USC research led by Dr. Valter Longo:

Specially targeted foods are available through health practitioners if you are currently undergoing treatments, such as radiation therapy.

Fasting is a thousand year tradition in China. While qigong, taichi, and meditation are integral to its mental health practice, fasting is integral to its medicine practice. Some fasting can last many days or months, including water-only regimens, as well as restricted diet fasts, such as rice soup (porridge) and apples. Some Chinese masters use herb formulas to do more cleansing at the beginning of the fast. [And we will explore some of these as well.]

Scientific verification of fasting benefits is not new. 150 years ago, German doctor and scientist Arnold Ehret did extensive research on fasting. His book Mucusless Diet Healing System: Scientific Method of Eating Your Way to Health encouraged people to use fasting as part of their maintenance for mental (clarity) and physical health.

At this year’s annual A4M anti-aging congress conference, attendance by doctors doubled compared to last year. Many of these doctors, who came from around the world, practice what is known as functional medicine, which is based on finding the underlying cause of a health problem, and focuses on lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, sleep and meditation. Research on fasting was one of the main topics of this year’s conference. Many of the doctors jumped on the Fasting Mimic Diet wagon, and will be implementing it with their patients.

Join this exciting revolution in personal health care, and learn how to prepare these delicious, nutrient-packed FMD meals at home.

Meditation and Fasting have been practiced together for thousands of years in Asia. This week, we shall do the same, practicing different forms of meditation as we set out on a healthy fasting journey.
Why Meditation with Fasting? Fasting is a physical cleansing. Meditation is a cleansing of the mind. From birth, we are conditioned by society along specific guidelines, whose limited perspectives can narrow and confuse the mind. Just as shown in this picture.
Meditation, as Paul Puddicombe said in his new book “The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness”, creates mindspace, enabling us to see with clarity from a wider perspective. While striving and achieving are inherent to our nature, meditation enables us to realize that our most lasting happiness and joy is not found in the goals we set for ourselves. This realization helps us to live a life of ease, confidence and freedom in the face of life’s obstacles, heartbreaks and inevitable setbacks.

Between meals morning and afternoon, we will practice the Standing Post Meditation. One of the most potent of all meditations, Standing Post not only calms our mind, it tones our muscles from head to toe, opens our chest, and strengthens our kidneys. With respect to just muscle toning alone, 15 minutes of Standing Post Meditation is the equivalent of one hour of Aerobic exercise.

Other meditations will include:
The Union of Three Hearts. Practiced sitting on mats on the floor, this key Sheng Zhen meditation, grounded in earth energy and accessing heart energy, enables us to connect to universal healing energy. In addition, as with all mat-sitting meditations, it keeps our spine and neck straight and stretches our pelvic floor, increasing both flexibility to our hips and blood circulation to our reproductive system.

Chair Meditation. A combination of mindfulness meditation and Sheng Zhen healing meditation. Sheng Zhen healing meditation is very age-friendly, with simple, graceful movements that activate healing energy throughout the body. Vipassana meditation is designed to allow the mind to escape its habitually chaotic, mindless, flow by training it to be fully present to each arising moment, beginning with the ever- arising movement of the breath throughout the otherwise stilled body. The practice has been compared to taming a wild elephant by tying it to a post. At first the elephant constantly fights against its restriction, but gradually it comes to accept it, so that even if the rope is untied from the post the elephant does not wander off. So too, as mindfulness develops, you do not feel yourself to be controlling the mind, so much as settling into a relaxed, but alert, awareness, called “bare awareness,” whether such bare awareness remains fully with the breath or on the thoughts or feelings that inevitably still arise. Done as a daily practice, Vipassana eases our worries and anxieties. Our heart becomes settled as our mind, habitually attuned to each arising moment, gains a liberating clarity.

Nine Turns Lying Down Meditation. This meditation came to Master Li Junfeng in a dream in which he felt himself being instructed by Lao Tzu. Most effective to people with insomnia or bed ridden. The meditation begins by tracing the energy coursing through the acupoint channels.

Ditch The Can. Help The Planet.

TetraPak Cartons Vs Cans: The 5 Simple Truths

"The can was invented over 200 years ago, before the invention of the bra or the ballpoint pen! It has served us well, but it’s time we move to an environmentally friendly alternative".”

— Guy Blaksey, Founder of Pooch & Mutt

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, January 30, 2019 / — The environment is the hot topic on everyone’s lips at the moment, and rightly so. For far too long big businesses have put profits ahead of the planet and we are all becoming increasingly aware of how unsustainable a lot of the products that we consume are. We’ve seen this hit the headlines with shoppers turning their back on big brands with unsustainable packaging including Walkers and Pringles.

Big businesses need to defend their position. They can do this by improving their offering, or by trying to silence those who challenge them. The latest effort to silence a brand comes from the MPMA (Metal Packaging Manufacturer’s Association), who are threatening the independent, ethical dog food brand, Pooch & Mutt.

Pooch & Mutt’s advert urges people to “Ditch the Can. Help the Planet”, as the TetraPak cartons that they use for their dog food have been proven in independent studies, such as the study by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) to have 80% less global warming potential than cans.

The benefits are so great that the number of cartons sold in the first 6 months of launch, had the equivalent benefit to the environment of planting 200 trees! And this is from a company, who is a minnow in the pet world compared to the whales of Mars (Pedigree, Royal Canin, James Wellbeloved) and Nestle (Purina, Winalot,

The carton’s lower global warming potential comes down to 5 simple truths:
1. Raw materials: Cartons are primarily made from a renewable resource
2. Production: Energy used in production
3. Transport when empty: 1 lorry of empty cartons is the equivalent of 9 lorries of cans
4. Space when full: Cartons offer a 40% space saving Vs cans.
5. Weight: Cans are 3x heavier than cartons
To watch Pooch & Mutt’s video explaining the 5x truths go to

Guy Blaskey, the founder of Pooch & Mutt says “The latest campaign for our wet food cartons urges customers to ‘Ditch the Can. Help the Planet’, as they are proven to have 80% less global warming potential than cans. It’s disappointing to get threats from MPMA. The can was invented over 200 years ago, before the invention of the bra or the ballpoint pen! It has served us well, but it’s time we move to an environmentally friendly alternative. The MPMA claim the environmental benefits of cans by quoting recycling rates, but that is a very tiny portion of the life cycle of a can and it’s associated emissions. It is true that recycling rates are lower for cartons, but 92% of UK local authorities offer carton recycling, we just need to get people to know this. When a customer is standing in front of a supermarket shelf, armed with the facts, there is no argument that if they want to do the best for the environment they should ‘Ditch the Can’ and pick up a carton.’

New York Phenomenon, Burger Village, Expands to West Coast

Leading Organic Burger Franchise Goes Bi-Coastal with Five New CA Locations

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, January 29, 2019 / — Burger Village, the New York-based chain with full-service restaurants in Great Neck and Hicksville, Long Island, and Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, and plans for QSR locations in Farmingdale, Long Island, and downtown Brooklyn, New York has just signed a multi-unit franchise agreement in California. Known for its healthy take on America’s favorite food: the hamburger, Burger Village, and its organic, all-natural, antibiotics and hormone free menu, will open a full-service restaurant in San Luis Obispo, California in Spring 2019. Four additional quick service locations are planned for Dublin, Sunnyvale, San Jose, and Palo Alto later in the year. Franchises are scalable and available as both full-service or quick service restaurant formats.

“California is a natural extension for the Burger Village brand,” says Nick Yadav, one four brothers who launched Burger Village in 2013. “The same healthy and busy lifestyle found in New York is exemplified in California. The Burger Village motto to “eat organic, live healthy” is also a mantra for the majority of west coast diners.”

The Burger Village menu offers USDA certified organic hamburgers and exotic meats (such as bison, elk and boar), salads, wraps, fresh cut fries, onion rings, organic milkshakes and sodas, organic beers and wines, desserts, gluten-free and vegan options, and other natural foods. The Brand Ambassador for the chain is football All-American, Prince Amukamara, cornerback of the Chicago Bears of the National Football league (NFL). Amukamara is both a fan and an investor, with plans to open his own Burger Village franchise in the coming year.

As a loyal customer in their Park Slope Brooklyn location, Amukamara was a fan of the food at Burger Village, but also admired the way the brothers did business and their strong family values. “At Burger Village, they believe in organic in a way that benefits the consumer and the planet.” The NFL star adds, “Burger Village products come from farms and dairies that are mostly family owned and operated. The livestock and produces are nourished and cared for naturally and humanely.” He adds, “Burger Village has taken an American staple, the burger, and made it guilt-free, good for you, and good for the environment.”

Burger Village has teamed with franchise industry expert, Gary Occhiogrosso, the founder of Franchise Growth Solutions, LLC, to expand the turnkey Burger Village fast casual QSR (quick service restaurant) business model from eleven (11) in 2019 to twenty-five (25) locations by 2021. Mr. Occhiogrosso has over 30 years’ experience in franchise development and sales and was integral to the success of nationally recognized brands including Ranch *1, Desert Moon Fresh Mexican Grille, and brands found under the multi-brand franchisor, TRUFOODS, LLC.

The Allure of Auctions…For Jobs

The Job Auction

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, January 29, 2019 / — The Job Auction has just passed the milestone of its 11 months birthday. It’s chief component and USP is the auction function, a utility that elevates it above its alternatives as a jobs board.

Much has been made of the phrase ‘unique selling point’ but often what makes a good one is the fact that it can be summarised succinctly and vividly. You’ll hear The Job Auction staff happily use the phrase ‘eBay for jobs’ to describe their employer and comparison to the e-commerce giant is enthusiastically accepted. At The Job Auction they do exactly what you would expect with a name like that: auctioning jobs.

The site operates as a regular jobs board but also has one distinct difference. Those using it can chose to advertise jobs or tasks that they need doing and then anyone who thinks that they might be a good fit can put themselves forward. This makes sure that the interested parties are constantly negotiating and they themselves are in total control of proceedings.

The Job Auction is inspired by auctions which act as physical proof that value is a fluid concept. Not one person will have the same opinion on how much a position or task is worth and the system The Job Auction has in place makes sure that everyone involved in the processes voice is heard.

They have a messaging system in place as well as the option to lock the price as the potential employer so that while everyone has their say, those who advertised the job have the final word. It’s a website that puts the power firmly into the hands of its users in a way that will enhance the business acumen of all of those who chose to be involved.

Options like ‘Skill Auction’ and ‘Tasks’ means that advertisement itself is interchangeable and the notion of what can and cannot be bid on is up for debate. If you can think of anything you’d like to do or have done for you, The Job Auction can facilitate that need.

Auctions have the prospect of bargain hunting and those in the know can utilise them to achieve things that wouldn’t be possible at a regular marketplace. The Job Auction aims to attract all people who are excited by the possibility of grafting for work. Negotiating salary in a traditional interview setting might see you out the door but on this site it is readily encouraged.

A trailblazing site with few businesses in the same headspace, the site’s clean and easy-to-use functionality should appeal to anyone looking to market themselves in a modern working world which more often than not limits your own possibilities. With the power in your hands, The Job Auction ensures that what you get is only limited by what you want.
